Simcoe / CTZ

Fri Jun 11, 2010 5:20 pm

So I have 2 bags of Niko 2008 hops both labeled Simcoe. One is CTZ. How the hell do I figure out which one is Simcoe and which is CTZ? Ready to dry-hop my APA today and the amounts are not the same.

Oooops.

I'd make a hop tea with the same, small amount of each. Drink the tea and determine which one is the most bitter, and that should be the higher alpha CTZ.

Then label your bag.

CTZ smells more like pot.

the CTZ will smell (and taste) a bit more piney/resiny - like a mix of Chinook and Cascade
the Simcoe will smell and taste a bit more oniony

Another idea would be to brew a small batch, maybe a 1.5 gallons but split the mash runnings into two little pots and hop each one with just one of the bags. Then ferment in growlers. An all simcoe beer should have a catty pungent kick with a nice passionfruit note. We did a single hop beer thing in our club and the simcoe one was very distinguishable. I think we did an APA, tried to hit the IBUs right in the middle of the style using 60, 30, 10, 0 minute additions as well as dry hopping.

I dunno, I don't smoke and I know what it smells like. I guess it is just fairly common to run into the smell at some point.
