Agave

Has anyone out there brewed with agave extract/nectar? I picked up a couple of small bottles and want to add it in.

Have not used agave nectar, but with such a delicate aroma at minimum it should be added at the very end of the boil so as not to boil off any aromatics. Might even be best to find a way to add it to the primary fermenter as the fermentation slows down so as to keep as much of the wonderful characteristics of the nectar.

I added 5# to a batch at flame out. turned out great, but kinda deceptive. at the end of primary when you think you are stable on your SG, rouse the yeast and let sit for another few days. then check your gravity again. the agave adds a slightly sweet, slightly spicy flavor. was thinking of using a saison yeast next time to enhance it.

Is agave extract/nectar the sap of the blue agave, or another product?

I'm interested. Where do you get the stuff?

Holy Shit! Twenty bucks for 2.5 lbs!

I like the aroma and flavor of tequila. Agave nectar could be interesting in the 10-20% range of the malt bill.

If you know please tell me how many pppppg the stuff has. B3 doesn't say.

Not sure if this gives you what you're looking for, but I use this in equal quantities as I use honey. It's grown locally and provides a nice, light aroma. I would recommend chucking it in at flameout and adjusting based on the results in your brewery. I like a light touch to golden ales and blondes and such. 8 ounces/5 gallons or so has worked out well for me.

My wife's a damn hippy and keeps a load of this stuff around, so it's one expense I don't have to justify.

yeah, it was probably the most expensive beer I brewed. probably why I haven't brewed it again yet. not sure what you mean by "pppppg". it should be used as the same ratio as honey.
