Re-Using yeast that was "fined"

Fri Mar 03, 2006 7:32 am

I got a little yeast from a microbrewery using 570-wlp, and I'd like to culture it up, but they used Gelatin to clear the beer. Would there be any problems making a starter with the slurry I collected?

i have always liked that my brews never had horsebones etc in them..

How does it look? If it is one large gelatinous blob, then you might be in for a challenge. If it looks and pours pretty much like normal yeast, then my guess is that it would work fine.

You could make a small starter out of a little bit of that slurry and see if that behaves normally before you commit the whole beer.

i would take it and grow it on a petri dish and re culture it from there

thanks all,

I don't have a petri dish, nor the knowledge to culture from a really small # of cells. The yeast looks just fine. I will make a starter, and try to grab some of the kreusen and the liquid rather than the cake in the bottom.

throw them some 1.040 wort and some yeast nutrient and you should be a yeast farmer.
