King syrup vs Lyles Golden

Tue Mar 11, 2014 5:31 am

In one show Jamil talked about using Treacle and that there really wasn't a substitute he did however mention blackstrap molasses. I noticed the Lyle's golden syrup also and wanted to find another substitution for this also. What I found (which I saw in stores but never tried) is King syrup, which is labeled a "golden syrup" and isn't just corn syrup. They also make a dark which is called Po-T-Rik King syrup (seemingly a mixture of their golden + molasses?) I'm guessing this would be the same as Lyles dark treacle. Anyone ever try both? All this is in reference to me wanting to make a clone of Theakston's Old Peculier

If you want to make your own, here is a link. http://www.unholymess.com/blog/beer-bre ... ers-invert This will be much cheaper, and it's pretty easy, but will take an hour or two. Sorry I can't say I have tried the King stuff.

For anyone interested
After getting Lyles Golden and treacle, I noticed there isn't a close substitute. And making them would be out of the question as it's not close either.
Lyle's Golden has a heavy caramel and slight buttery taste, King's has a corn syrup and touch of molasses smell.
Treacle is not like black strap, black strap smells slightly sour and sulfur, while Treacle smells similar it lacks the sour and sulfur and gains a black liquorice smell.
I will still search for a substitution while i have some left so I can compare and contrast
