Smoked malt from Castle Malting

Thu Apr 14, 2011 5:28 am

Has anyone used?

It says on the site it´s a peat smoked malt. I chewed on a few and it´s definetely different from weyermann rauchmaltz, more woody/campfire like.

But the thing is: on the site it says you can use up to 100%, which is a lot different from what Jamil said on peat smoked malt.

Would you guys say it´s a valid attempt to brew a rauch beer with that malt? I will be entering that into a competition.

Or smoking my own malt will give me better results?

Thanks!!

I've only had experience with UK peat-smoked malts, typically the type used in whisky. I'd say that the peat-smoke is very pungent in those and restraint is good, getting another type of smoke is better. I like peat smoke in my whisky, but not really in my beer.

I'd believe what a malster says, they may smoke the malt much less than the UK malsters. I'd try a small amount out. Like I said, you can taste it from teh UK malsters in as little as a few percent.

One of the tips they mentioned on jamil's Rauchbier show was to brew the recipe substituing all of the base malt with Rauchmalt and blend to taste.
