Flaked Barley in a cream ale?

Mon Apr 04, 2011 6:00 pm

Hi all-
So I recently found a partial mash recipe for a cream ale that is supposed to be similar to New Glarus' "spotted cow". After reading the ingredients, I see it calls for about 1/4 pound of flaked barley. I am still pretty new, but I was under the impression that flaked barley was basically only used in darker styles, like porters or stouts. In a lighter beer like a cream ale, wouldn't that just make it cloudy? Perhaps spotted cow is supposed to be cloudy - I haven't had it in years, and though I remember really liking it, I don't really remember anything specific about it. Any info would be appreciated.

I can understand it clouding up if you try to steep it, but if you mash it, it should be just fine, especially in such a small amount.
