Munich and Aromatic malt

Tue Nov 30, 2010 4:12 pm

I really enjoy the toasty, maltiness of both munich and aromatic malts. I do understand the color difference as well vs the lighter munich (8 or so L) and aromatic malt (20-25 L). My question to you malt heads is how much munich do you feel you would need to add to replace say 1# of aromatic. Not just for color (obviously) but more for getting that similar flavor and aroma characteristics?
Just kind of curious as to their interchangeability with regards to amounts.

Sometimes Aromatic is described as a "more intense" Munich. I would start at around 1.5-2.0 pounds Munich = 1.0 pounds Aromatic and go from there.

It will probably depend on the beer. On a Helles you might taste the difference, but on a Belgian Strong Dark and Flanders Red you might not.
