Bitter Orange Peel in a Pale

Wed May 12, 2010 9:04 am

If anyone thinks this is a stupid idea, then let me know. I can always use the Orange Peel later on. I just tried Scurvy from Tyranena, which is an IPA with Orange Peel. What I have here is a grist of Tasty's Pale and a hodgepodge of the hops that I have.

In my clone of blue moon I use 50% bitter orange peel and 50% fresh zest. About .75oz each. Considering that the blue moon is a less hoppy beer (15 ibu) than what you have here these amounts should be fine or do 1 oz of each.

What the hell!!! It will probably be overwhelmed by the 7.5 ounces of hops anyway. I will try to report back in a month or so.

Don't forget, that stuff is going to add bitterness even if it's not IBU's. There is s reason why Belgian wits have 10-15 IBU max when they use bitter orange peel. So if you go with peel you should think about dialing back the IBU's a bit, or maybe just use zest if you want the flavor/aroma. Bitter orange peel isn't very citrusy anyway.

I pretty much talked myself out of it, but I might give it a shot the next time around. I haven't been able to brew in 3 months, so I don't want to fuck up my first batch back in. The burner fires up as soon as the wife and kiddo leave the driveway. I will just have to motivate the faithful brewing partner to forego her day of sleeping on the couch to help me out, which shouldn't be a problem as long as the rawhide and tennis balls are flowing.

I tried a friend's IPA which he added about 3 oz of fresh citrus zest to. He called it a "Brunch beer" and it was pretty enjoyable honestly, a total citrus bomb. So don't give up the idea if you want to do it.
