Bigfoot Barleywine clone question

Thu Sep 07, 2006 10:34 am

I am getting ready to brew the bigfoot clone recipe from july/august zymurgy but i cannot seem to locate any english crystal 105. is this out there somewhere?....is there something i could substitute safely? why can't i find this? i was thinking of using a crystal or caramel malt with a lower lovibond rating since i will be using some briess gold LME to acheive the gravity...thoughts?

thanks,

Jay

Myself, I would use some 120L or 135L, assuming you can get it. Use your software to figure out how much to cut back the amount to end up with the same color. I find using a bit less crystal in a barleywine makes it a little easier to hit your FG, especially if you are using some extract to help hit your OG.
