New House...Sulphury Water

Mon Nov 30, 2009 8:06 am

All,
I just moved into my new home this past weekend. My life has been in boxes for the past two years and my brewing equipment has been collecting dust. Needless to say, I'm ready to start brewing again. In the past few days I've had the time to sit down and think about my well water, and I found it to be very sulphury (rotten eggs). My question is this: Is that a smell that will be driven off during the brewing process or do I need to start buying my water?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

All the houses around here with well water have aerator tanks where the water is sprayed before it goes into the house. The aeration blows off the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) very well. I've brewed with the water straight out of the ground before by just blasting it into a bucket from the hose bib at full blast so it sprays a lot and the sulfur does not make it to the beer.

My well water has a lot of sulphur, iron and is very hard. Even after going through 2 whole house filters (sediment then rust/taste/odor cartridges) and a water softener the water still sucks. I installed a Reverse Osmosis system ($140 from local big box home improvement store). I add back some gypsum (1T),5.2 mash stabilizer (1T) and epsom salt (1/4t) in the mash for a 10 gallon batch and have had good results brewing with the RO water. I double the gypsum and add a 1/4t sea salt for hoppy beers. I know this seems pretty low tech but I stick by the KISS method for the brewing hobby. We use the RO water for our drinking water and in our aquarium also. The RO system has paid for itself many times over. Good Luck!

Check your pressure tank too. My girlfriend had this problem. Turned out the air bladder had gone bad. If that's the case you need to replace it PDQ because the system will cycle every time the faucet drips and burn out the pump.
