All Fresh (Wet) Mt. Hood Hops - Can it be done?

Fri Aug 14, 2009 12:59 pm

I've got tons of Mt. Hood hops almost ready to harvest...I know that Mt. Hood has a pretty low AA%; Has anyone used this this variety for a fresh hop beer before? Did you use ALL fresh Mt. Hood? Some? Part dry?

I saw this recipe: http://www.thebrewingnetwork.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=11748&p=117354&hilit=hop+trip+clone#p117354 and it has all Mt. Hood hops...however, if I were to "fresh hop" this, it looks like I would have to use about 3 lbs of hops? All I can think is that my brew kettle will clog!

Any suggestions? :bnarmy:

For that recipe I wound up using the Crystal hops.

Someone on here has figured out how to convert the dry weight to the wet weight. Meaning if the recipe says 2 oz of dry hops you would add 6 (or something) ounces of wet hops. Ya gotta remember though... it is the same number of hop cones. So in theory it shouldn't clog your kettle any more than the two ounces of dried hops. Make sense?

My Crystal hops exploded this year. I am going to rebrew the Hop Trip clone with homegrown Crystal fresh hops. That recipe was damn good and close enough for me, but probably not close enough to pass the Can You Brew It challenge.

Oh course...it's the same amont of cones!!! What was I thinking? Or in this case not thinking. Thank you. A big 'duh' moment for me.

The recipe calls for dry hops...will you also be dry hopping with the fresh hops? I was thinking of just throwing them in at the end of the boil.

do you have the option to do a larger boil and do a boat load of late hopping? I'm hoping that if you dry hop that they don't have any critters growing on them and that you won't get a vegetal flavor from using a lot of low AA hops.
