I used one of these

+1 on that plainer. that thing will zest an orange in under 30 seconds. my girl had one and i was skeptical of using it but she showed me the way. its kinda fun to use. just keep fingers and any other flesh away you dont want to be ground up away!
Cheers!

I agree with the microplanes. They can make short order of any citrus fruit you put in front of it.

I don't really like the dried orange peels that my LHBS carries. When I did try them, the orange peels did have the pith on them. I did not like the results so much.

In a trippel, I once put in lemon, lime, and orange zest at flame out. It was awesome, pure, citrusy goodness. Even after a year and a half you can still detect the citrus aroma in the nose. I dig the combo of many types of zest so you can't exactly pick one out.

So I'm drinking my Belgian pale ale that I flavored with Valencia peel and coriander right now. I must say that I prefer bitter orange peel in beers. The Valencia just doesn't seem right in this one. I think I'd prefer it in a wheat beer but not an all barley grist beer. The coriander note is perfect. But even the 1g per gallon amount of Valencia peel I used in this is too much. 1g/gallon works with the coriander I think though.

Not to mention any flesh that happens to rub up against them during the zesting. Those bastards work great, but boy are they tricky to use if you don't know how or have butterfingers.

I brewed a wit on Saturday and used a variety of citrus fruits (oranges, lemons...) and just used the side of the cheese grater that has the tiny holes to zest, it worked great, super easy and painless
