LHBS = complete rip off

Fri Aug 31, 2007 4:45 pm

I was at my LHBS today to buy a carboy and some carboy hoods. I don't buy my ingredients from them because they don't sell all grain stuff and a tonne of other reasons. Anyway, I noticed they had some kegs around so I asked them for prices. Would be a lot easier to buy there than online and deal with shipping etc. Anyway, he explains to me that one keg is new and the rest are used. He quoted me $90CDN for the used keg and $180 for the new one. What in the hell? I just said "Oh no thanks". I didn't want to get into the whole "You can buy them for $30 online". Glad I put in my order with northern brewer last week. Got 3 kegs on the way with shipping and rebuild kits for each all for the price of their new keg. If anyone from Ottawa reads here it was Defalco's on Gladstone. Jokers...

PS Next time I'm there I might refer them to TBN and B3 just to give them an idea of how far off track they are. But wine makers keep them open.

That should be a chargeable offense, you should report them. There's gotta be a charge that fits like "attempted rape", "voluntary wallet slaughter", or " assault with an overpriced weapon". :shock:

When I was listening to the show with Homer as a guest and he was describing his LHBS from back in the day it almost perfectly described this place. Morgan's ale yeast and lager yeast, stale extract, crystal malt of an unknown lovibond rating, and terrible advice in this case. bunch of jokers

Sounds like the best thing you could do is "vote with your feet" ... or open a competing shop. Maybe More Beer needs a new store in Canada. How about it Chris? Ready to franchise?

That's crazy. My LHBS sells reconditioned cornies for $35 I think. You would think that if they get most of their business from the wine makers they could afford to offer better prices on the beer.
