I'd have to see pictures to know for sure what you're talking about. If it's a drain to let out water created by defrosting & you don't know it's entire history, it could very likely be clogged. Drains do that when you don't take care of them. That's if it's a drain at all.
On my first one, an ancient mini fridge, I disconnected the auto-defrost completely & about once a month or so there would be enough ice build up that I'd unplug it, crack the door, put a 1x2 piece of pine to elevate the back & throw down a towel. By morning, the ice would melt, run out the front & the towel would get almost all of it. Mildly inconvenient, but easy & it gave me a good excuse to wipe down the entire inside & sanitize it with a couple Clorox wipes. Just a thought.
