6 Gallons fermented and it's time to keg

Tue Oct 02, 2007 4:23 pm

For a couple of reasons I ended up with ~6.1 of IPA in my 6.5 gal carboy.

I plan to transfer about 1/2 gal into a growler before moving the remainder to the keg. I'm trying to come up with the best way to carbonate the beer in the growler since it will have been in the kegerator at 35f for 2 days to crash everything down (as I usually do before kegging).

If I prime the growler will there be enough yeast to naturally carbonate?

Or should I just refrigerate the growler and siphon it into the keg later when there is room?

This situation is precisely why I made a couple carbonator caps for some 2 liter bottles. Since you are in immediate need of an answer, I say you should just refrigerate the growler flat until you can add it to the keg. Keep the head space to a minimum.

Let me know if you have kegged yet. I can lend you a keg for a few weeks if you like.

Thanks Wayne, I believe there was a Zymurgy piece on how to make those carbonator caps, I'll try to have some ready for next time.

In the meantime I'll lay some c02 in the growler before filling it.

Thanks for the offer, but I actually bought some extras, now I need to brew more to fill them :)
