bottle filling for contests

Sun Aug 05, 2007 3:44 pm

I borrowed my club's beer gun to fill some 12 oz bottles for a contest, and I had LOTS of foam. I filled until it flowed clear and capped on the foam, but when it settled, there's more head space than you would get if you were bottling your beer out of a secondary fermenter. The beer is still in the neck, but maybe 1/2" lower than a "normally filled" bottle.

Will it remain carbonated or is the head space too much?

PS - My keg was over pressured and has been for awhile, so I am going to try to get the pressure in solution down so I can refill again if I have to.

My beer-gun-filled bottles are all of an okay level...

Perhaps you should double-check your pressure(s)...?

Pressure sounds like the problem to me too. I keep the pressure down to about 3-4 pounds and use 8 feet of tubing from the keg to the beer gun. This drops the pressure down to where I get very little foam.
