Cold Plates

Fri Aug 03, 2007 7:00 am

Has anybody ever tried running beer through cold plates set in a fridge or freezer and then to the taps? I was thinking I might be able to serve more types of beer if I kept the kegs in my basement at a reasonable temp but ran it through a cold plate in a fridge and then out to the taps in my dining room...

comments/suggestions?

Hmm, my only experience with cold plates is in our club bar and I can tell you that at times with the beer cool and the cold plate in a big iced up cooler it can warm up a little bit.

So I don't know how well a air cooled plate is going to work.

Air is a very inefficient heat transfer medium. This idea would work only if you plan to pour maybe one glass of beer each hour. Perhaps if you stick the cold plate into a 5 gallon bucket of water and keep the fridge as close to freezing as possible you might make it work.
