Bling Overload - I want to have babies with my new mashtun

Mon Aug 31, 2009 4:39 pm

This arrived in the mail today- not cheap, but good value indeed for what it is. My present to myself for passing the first of my 3 IBD Diploma of Brewing exams.

Image Image Image

All stainless, closed cell nitrile insulation on the lid, bottom and sides, full width false bottom, dial thermo, dish wort return system (for my RIMS) and 3 piece stainless ball valve.

Beautifully made brewing gear from Beerbelly Brewing Equipment in Adelaide south Australia (no affiliation apart from being a very happy customer)

Next brew commissions this beauty, my newly homemade 60L kettle and my conversion to continuous sparging.

Thirsty is a happy little brewer!!

Very nice. Started rigging up my Igloo cooler mashtun. Now it knows what it wants to be when it grows up.

SO thirsty, can you explain the wort return system, is the dish on a rod so you can move it up or down depending on mash size, and does the wort just cascade over the sides of the dish, or do you need a screen on top of the mash too?

Yep, the dish is on a rod and is adjustable up and down - you put it so the lip of the dish is just under the surface of the liquid and then when the wort returns into the dish, it wells up over the edges and flows out evenly across the surface.

Kind of like if you were pouring a layered cocktail and you poured the "top" portion into a spoon layed right at the surface to stop any vertical mixing and spread it out evenly..

I'm not fussed about efficiency - what I want is false bottom surface area so I can get maximum flow rate through my RIMS - which gives me faster steps and better, more accurate temp control. Mind you I'd expect efficiencies in the 90s were I to try and get them.
