no problem with that, i have a loooong pair of aluminum mechanical fingers that allows me to gently place to SS bolt right on the bottom inside of the glass growler.

You can drop it in without problems by tilting the flask/jug and slide the stirbar on in, my concern is what happens if you throw the stir bar and crack/shatter the vessel. I hate cleaning up sticky wort and glass much less a combo, it is possible that you will not have that problem.

well, i don't see why or how i would 'throw' a big SS bolt into the glass growler, so i'm not worried about cleaning up any mess. besides, the growler that i'm using is from a well known Austin brewery/beer bar, so the blass bottom is pretty strong. thanks for the input, though

I think HH was referring to the spinning action "throwing" the stirbar. On many of the homemade stir plates you can crank up the spin so much that the magnet can no longer hold onto the stirbar.

Just a thought on this. We've all pitched the yeast and the stir bar into the carboy at least once. This being said, this may pose a problem if the uncoated SS bolt hits the bottom of the carboy. In reality, it probably won't hit the bottom w/ enough force to break the carboy. Just be carefull when doing the transfer.

At least once? Yesterday was the first time in the last 6 brew days that I didn't pitch the stir bar into the carboy!

Lars is right, after working for several years in the Biology lab at a major university I have seen some freakish accidents in the lab. I have personally had several heavy duty pyrex flasks explode on the stir plate due to the stirbar being "thrown" from the magnetic grip and into the side wall of the flask. Granted most homebrewers have pristine glassware that has not been abused on the daily basis so this may not be a concern to most. I do think that the possibility is still present. YMMV

This sounds a lot like my setup? Cigar box and all!

Check it out.

Just spend the eight bucks on a new magnetic stir bar. The teflon coating is absolutely necessary for preventing damage. I guarantee it will always be smoother than any polished ss converted bolt rubbing on glass at a few hundred rpms.
