Erlenmeyer Flask

Thu Mar 27, 2008 3:30 pm

A buddy of mine who works in a lab recently gave me an Erlenmeyer flask that was going to be thrown away. Neither he nor I have any clue about what the flask was used for in the lab. I spent ten minutes cleaning it out with a lab grade detergent, hit it with a 70% denatured ethanol solution and washed in it my dishwasher. There is still a ring of white residue around the inside of the flask (which I think is a stain), but other than that there are no scratches and it looks fine. Do you think that it will be safe to use for starters or will I get cancer and die in three years? Thanks for the help.

try scrubbing the white ring with an acid. If you can't get your hands on anything strong, you might use vinegar. Just be careful not to hurt yourself.

All of my flasks are decommissioned lab flasks. I think you'll be OK.

Watch out for the ghonnasyphlaherpaids, I'm pretty sure you need more than star san to clean that off.
