WLP530 vs. WLP545?

Mon Mar 17, 2014 6:06 am

I have an upcoming brew that calls for WLP545 (Ardennes) but have 530 (Abbey) on hand.

How significantly different would the beer turn out if I were to use 530 instead of 545? Really noticeable or ...?

I have noticed that the Ardennes has a bit spicier, more phenolic note than the 530. That could obviously be fermentation temperature dependent of course... The 530 seems a bit more fruity too. What type of beer are you brewing?

It's a Belgian inspired beer with Raisins (DFH Raison D'Etre).

Id say go with 530 if you already have it. Its my favorite belgian yeast. It may not be a clone, but should turn out great.

I've been using 530 for a Westy 12 clone. I'm hoping it is close enough.
