Small brown things floating in a vile of my WLP 001 Cal Ale

Sun Feb 10, 2008 11:42 pm

So I took a vile of yeast (WLP 001) out of my fridge, purchased it a few days ago, to allow it to warm up a bit so I could pitch to my starter. As it was warming up I shook it and noticed some small brown flaky things floating inside of it.

Anyone have any idea what this may be? The date on it says use by 10-10-08 and the guys at the homebrew shop told me that it just came in the day before I bought it.

Hmm... Something is fishy. Yeast viability really goes down after 4 months. I seriously doubt that the vial that you are holding is good until 10/10/08. Unless they changed their process at White Labs, recently... Double check that and get back to us.

Well... it is scratched up a bit so I couldn't clearly read the use by date, it looked like 10-10-08. Whatever it is, it is something that ends on the 10th of some month in 2008. I went ahead and pitched it to a starter. The starter is fermenting up all right, but I can still see the floaty things in there. I am not going to pitch this. Instead I am going to go to the homebrew shop and explain to them what the deal is. Hopefully they will hook me up.
