Ice Coffee Tip

Tue Jun 24, 2008 6:27 am

I know this is probably a no-brainer tip..but I thought I'd pass it on anyway.
I like to make my own ice coffee. Mainly because it's way cheaper than buying one at the local Dunkin' Donuts. To avoid that watered- down effect from the melting ice cubes, make coffee ice cubes. It works pretty good!

I'm willing to guess this would work well with iced tea as well.

Be careful with this. I once had a pot of hot coffee that I wanted to chill into iced coffee so I stuck it in the refrigerator. EVERYTHING in there ended up smelling/tasting of coffee. Even the water in a Brita pitcher. It might not be much of a problem in a freezer, though.

How do you guys do it?

I only fill two or three ice trays at a time and I have not had any coffee funk in the freezer.

Also, I ususally make my ice coffe using fresh brewed coffee. That way the hot liquid disolves the sugar thus avoiding sugar grit.

Although, if using cooled coffee you could make simple syrup, still avoiding that grit.

ever herd of cold pressed coffee??

much better than brewing it hot just to chill it....plus you get some of the finer flavors that you lose when scalding water passes over grounds.

They have a device that does it for you.

I just fill up a pitcher with 1/2 pound of fresh ground, local roasted coffee and add about a quart or two of water. Let it sit overnight on counter. then filter it. shove in fridge or add to secondary fermentation. :jnj

just google "cold pressed coffee"
suck it

I drink cold brew coffee every day. It is great stuff. Also a good way to control coffee additions for coffee stouts etc.

Excellent tips. I just account for the dilution by making EXTRA STRONG coffee. By the third cup the pot has cooled down to where I hardly dilute... Then I walk around like this all day.
