Would you fry a turkey in your boil pot?

Tue Nov 14, 2006 8:46 am

I just finished listening to the Sunday food show. Now I want to deep fry a turkey marinated with Ommegang.

Lots of people buy turkey fryers for making beer, but I want to use my converted keg for deep frying a turkey. Ill take out the thermometer (doesn't go high enough) and remove the gasket from the pickup tube. Possibly remove the ball valve completely, I don't know if it could handle the heat if it has teflon or plastic parts.

Would you do it with your boil kettle?

YOU can get a pot that will hold your turkey cheaper than you can replace all the ruined stuff on your boil kettle.

The rule is always if it's used for brewing don't use it for cooking. Can you imagine the time and energy it would take to remove the greese from your boil kettle along with the flavor from the turkey? DON'T DO IT! The oil, turkey flavor and grease would have a detrimental effect on your beer in how it would taste and head retention issues.

Pretty risky.

However, the Ommegang infused turkey sounds awesome!

I would in fact use my current boil kettle. Then I would have a valid excuse to buy a nice new shiny one with a welded spigot and thermometer coupler.

Also, I would like to point out that your survey is invalid as it lacks a "No Pants" option.

Go and buy a cheap fryer from Wal-Mart for around $35 for the turkey. Then you will have another burner to make a sculpture with later...
