It's typically easiest to start with extract. You take a lot of the more difficult steps out & deal with the really important ones - boiling & fermenting. Once you have those skills down, you can reuse all the equipment & add some more pieces to move to all grain.

I would recommend you start here: http://howtobrew.com/book/introduction

Read the introduction, the equipment page & the chapter on brewing with malt extract. I think that will answer a lot of your initial questions.
