Why no "bookmark" ability with shows on iPod?

Thu Oct 20, 2005 6:56 am

I listen to a bunch of podcasts and all but the Brewing Network have bookmarks. When you are listening to a show and turn off the iPod, you can pick up where you left off. Do you have to encode the shows using a special encoder to enable bookmarks? Any plans to do this in the future?

I really dig the show, so keep up the great work!

Just checked on podcast and Justin added show from 9/18 to 10/16 so now if he would get the lastest show on it would be great...

you guys are quick! I posted just a few shows as I am beta testing our podcast software. I wanted to make sure all was working properly before letting you guys know they were there. We have launched things in the past without beta test and all was disastrous.

Anyway, as soon as I know that the podcasts are working...i.e. they can be bookmarked when stopped, new posts notify subscribers, etc. I will post a link on the main page and they will be free rein for all. although it appears they already are.

enjoy guys,

OK, I'm clueless on this. How exactly do you bookmark the mp3 file?

I love the archives, but my mp3 player doesn't let me scan inside a file, and it resets to the beginning of a file every time you turn it off. Kind of a pain when you've listened to 2+ hours of the show, then get interupted. Bookmarks would be awesome!

Yeah I'm working on the bookmark thing guys. the deal is that we did not start out as a podcast, but strictly a streaming radio station. So my audio editing software is not designed to edit podcasts. I have found some new software that I'm playing with this week. So hopefully all future archives will be bookmark friendly.

Ask and you shall recieve...eventually

How to create a bookmarkable file from an mp3

Mon Nov 28, 2005 9:52 am

I found some information about how to take an mp3 of the show and put it on the ipod with the bookmarking feature. I just did one today and it worked like a charm. I’m doing this from memory so everything may not be labeled exactly like I have it.

- Import the mp3 into your iTunes library
- Right-click on the file and select the option to convert the file to AAC encoding format (this will take a little while)
- Once the new file is created, right click it and select “Show File”
- Change the extension for the file from “.m4a” to “.m4b”. If the extensions don’t automatically show for the file you may have to go into the folder options and check the box to show file extensions for known file types.
- Import the new file into your music library and delete the old mp3 and the .m4a file (which iTunes won’t be able to find anymore)

Hope this helps!
