You probably haven't been around long enough to know the history of the Jane Hat here on the BN forum. There some diehard "Firefly" fans here and I think it was Code Writing Fool who first introduced the Jane Hat to us some years ago. He used it in his avatar and pretty soon it became the first real icon of The Brewing Network.

I wasn't the first, as much as I'd like to claim it. I copied it off of someone's avatar, perhaps Lufah, so I only claim to have made the first copycat avatar, then the frenzy started. I did it as a joke, but I certainly wasn't the first to use the Jayne hat on my avatar.

The actual BN asshat in circulation was made by LinuxElf's wife, who still sells kits, I think.

Above all, Firefly was first. I'm pretty darned certain that Lufah was first with the avatar, and his wasn't a photoshop job.

I am open to correction on any of the above points.

Yeah, she sells kits and also knitted hats. She's knitted and sold over 1,000 of those things.

Ahh...that would explain why these 2 girls at NHC were asking me about Firefly when I was wearing the Asshat (and looked at me like I was a jerk when I had no idea what they were talking about). It's strictly a BN Asshat to me!

Someone actually knitted me a Jane/Asshat hat a couple years ago when they found out I was watching "Firefly." After the first time I saw the hat on the BN forums it took me a while to figure out what the hell was going on. I couldn't sort out the Firefly-Homebrew connection. Now I'm just glad that I didn't do anything dumb like take a picture of myself wearing the hat and use it as my avatar.
