Basic Brewing Session

Mon May 18, 2009 7:35 pm

Now, i havent gone through all the sunday session or lunch meet shows, but here's another idea flowing through my head. (judging by my last one, i may be completely off base) I think there should be a show on basic brewing. I just got my brother into brewing and he's doing his first extract brew pretty soon. Either way, a basic brewing show would be great for new guys and folks wanting to get into it. just covering basic theory and extract brewing, a few different methods, that sort of thing. Feedback?

Personally, I don't think the session crew could stay on track that long and you would end up with a pretty muddy show. But Brew Strong on the other hand could probably pull it off. One hour of no bullshit basic brewing info would probably make for a great show.

You might want to try sorting through the first year or so of the Session/Sunday Show. The premise of the early sessions was J learning how to brew. With a little patience, a few fine brews and some laughs and you will learn many of the basics along with him.

I thought you meant having James Spencer from Basic Brewing on the session. Now that would be interesting.

Maybe a time where a scheduled guest cancels at the last minute, and they need a fill in show.

I'll bet if you got James Spencer on the show he would be the most foul mouthed, turrets sydrome mofo you've ever heard. He would put JP's skinsuit jokes to shame. It would be the classic Bob Sagat effect - a guy that sounds like Mr. Rodgers flipping a switch and going all dick and ass jokes would be cool as hell, actually. I vote we get him on soon.

That would be awesome. I like James and the BB crew, it got me through my novice phase in brewing and I think that they're quality folks.

Either the Bob Sagat effect would happen, or it would be the opposite, like if Rick Steves went on Stern.

I like the OP's idea though. Maybe the Brewcasters could take a breath from water chemistry and mash Ph to go back to their roots. J would be able to find a tie-in or theme that would keep us intermediate/advanced brewers interested. The only challenge would be slowing Doc's big brain down.

Yes, the earlier shows were more focused on brewing techniques for home brewers. I miss the homebrew shows. It would be cool, since there are so many new listeners, to re-cap some basic techniques every once and a while. Not saying we need a "Truth and All Grain Part II." But, some basic stuff interspersed with the pro guests. Anyone whop has some more concrete suggestions : chad@thebrewingnetwork.com

+1 on the brewing techniques for homebrewers (aka back to "our roots") Brandt.
