That way we can put a BN spin on the beer/name.

How about we call this style the Reverend Ale Sharpton? We'll consider it a form of reparations.

if a location is mentioned, it should be a very broad one like "american", but I think it should not be tied to any geographical location.

Can we tie it to earth? Earthican Dark Ale? Or do you think we might offend the brewers on planet Krynuk VII, who also independently developed a similar style of beer?

Let's all look back at the American Brown Ale...if it were called the Texas Brown Ale then we would need a Cali Brown Ale plus an American Eastern Brown Ale, etcetera, bullshit, etc. So, too much of a regional name is stupid unless it really defines a style. If you need to brew in a "west coast" style with heavy hops of a certain style does this define the style how it will be brewed? If you hop less and don't use hops that start with 'C' it would be wrong even if it is like an IPA but black? Anyway, wasn't there already a vent-thread on this?

IMHO a dark hoppy beer category is fine borwn/black whatever just don't use pale in the name or abbreviated form and I won't complain.

Or the word "cascadian"... lol

Right, Joe. Is that a real word or does it refer to cascade hops? If it refers to cascade hops, well...I'm pretty sure that you can make a great Black IPA/American Dark Ale/Whatever Dark Hoppy Ale without cascades.

If that were true we'd need a russian imperial stout, american imperial stout english imperial stout, etc.,

Also an India Pale Ale would become confusing as we already have American and English pale ales... Maybe one could be an India Pale Ale and the other could be a Pakistan Pale Ale (PPA motha fucka!)

Also there are no emperors in India, so how do we have an Imperial India Pale Ale? Imperial Russian Stout of course makes sense because of the imperial court of Catherine the Great, etc., etc.,

So therefore it doesn't have to make sense. And the Black IPA can work. We can just called it a blackened IPA, noting a beer that was pale that has been colored.

Or I still kind of like the Reverend Ale Sharpton. Perhaps that's cuz I'm a terrible person.

I've taken to calling them American Dark Strong ales lately and I like the ring to it... kinda like a Belgian Dark Strong. But is this too generic of a name and not specific enough?
