Only in my mind.
Quick show summary - There was nothing in Tasty's recipe that John Maier said he would change, but that particular brew was deemed "not cloned" by most either to not enough time for Tasty to age his beer, or a slight hint of oxidation, or both. The yeast was specially packaged and shipped out to Tasty as it is typically only a seasonal offering, so that might have been a factor as well, but kudo's to the yeast lab for doing that special out of season service on short notice for the BN. The audience was also able to sample Tasty's beer, but there was no Dead Guy Ale for us to compare it to. We were asked to vote if we were familiar with it, and my memory of the beer (it is one of the few we do get in Hawaii) it was close, but not cloned. John did mention that it did taste similar to the beer before it had been completely aged.
It was great having the pro brewer participate in the judging and offering his comments on Tasty and JZ's reason for formulating the clone recipe the way they do and offering his insights on his process.
John Maier seemed to be a really nice, reserved kind of guy - but he was obviously comfortable with the format and they way J and the rest of the brewcasters made him feel comfortable after a few minutes behind the mike. He seemed very comfortable being among homebrewers and spoke about being at the NHC and winning awards many years ago before going pro.
It was also very cool of Tasty to take time out to do the show at the tail end of also doing all of the cellering work he did for the NHC.
I think if a bottle or two of the clone can be shipped to the pro brewer for a follow up on the recording date if they can not meet in person would add another good twist to the show if the brewer can be available for a second interview.
Having the brewer present at the recording is even better.
