Agreed. We called ahead, supposedly there was 50 out of 250 seats sold and there were only like 30 people there. We snuck beer in (Thank God). I am also thankful that our video/sound worked so well (other than a couple of sound explosions between the live/movie switches after hearing those stories.

DannyW wrote:I'm left wondering what was their point, and did they achieve it? I saw no reason why the big deal about having a "live" event when there was nothing (other than miscues and mumbling) that being live added. I actually expected a proctor to be on hand in every theater to take questions from each local audience, submit the questions, and have some of them answered right then. The twitter thing was cool I guess, but didn't need to be done live.

I agree. We're talking about this in a review thread somewhere too. I don't see any reason to have had it live. It should have been rehearsed, edited, and shown on more than one night. It looked really amateur the way it was and didn't add anything.

DannyW wrote:If the point was about the 3 tier system, I wanted more detail. Get some of those lobbyists that are there to preserve it to describe why it deserves preserving! I bet they sound like idiots. We need 3 tier available but not legislated. Does any other industry or product have legislated requirement for separation between producer and consumer?

How about any industry where there is a tariff? Smoking? Alcohol? Sugar? Tariffs, regulation, and trade barriers create disincentives for consumers to buy one product over another.

Cigarettes would be 2 bucks a pack and sugar .10 cents a pound for the good stuff without trade restrictions. (if you're interested in the de-regulation argument read anything by the Nobel Prize winner Douglass C. North, though I disagree with him on some points given things like Enron and Madoff etc. that could have been prevented with better regulation). The only things that I think should be heavily regulated are domestic food production and production of military vehicles. Then you're not F*ed in wartime.

DannyW wrote:I guess their point was not to make money, as $15 per head times the small number of heads less the theater cut can't be much. We thought it would have been a better event shown on the Discovery channel or something. Even a $60 pay-per-view would have let us see it in a more beer friendly venue.

Sneak beer in like the rest of us  but I totally agree with you.

and a hand job and apology for having to listen to Rhonda Kallman for an hour and a half too long.

DannyW wrote:Other than Orval, what brewery can make it on a single niche product? I guess Pete's Wicked Ale started that way, but his beer was more unique than gimmicky. We have a similar product here in FL called Honey Amber Rose. As I understand it, a woman gets this contract brewed and it is her only product. Marketed to women, it's a light lager without much else as far as I recall. I'm suprised it is still around, but it certainly isn't getting any bigger.

I'm sure there are many. Gennessee cream ale before it got bought? The vast majority of breweries pre-prohibition and English breweries often got famous on one beer. Variety is a recent thing.

I got the same impression when I met him, twice. Truely an arrogant asshole.

I've never met the guy, but he seems like he has their marketing speak down pat. He seems nice enough.

"Because that's it's name." -Greg

He is arrogant, true, but that is the "persona" of their beer that he wants to present. Craft beer kicks crappy beer's ass and he is proud of it.

I think on a one-on-one basis if you could ever make him not talk about beer, that he would be a different guy, but that is the life he lives.

Would any of you consider not supporting such an apparent asshole by not buying Stone beer? Just curious...

Additionally, does anyone have any opinions on the World Bistro?

A shame that this wasn't included, because it's a huge piece of the puzzle.

Based on the trailer, I'm not surprised to hear this, which is one reason why I didn't go out of my way to see the opening. It seems like Anat latched onto just a small handful of people in the craft brewing world and let that be the story. The craft brewing world is huge! I would rather see a documentary that included a ton of sound clips from interviews of craft brewers around the world, not just an in-depth focus on a few. A documentary that ignored the big guys entirely and focused only on the craft beer community, philosophy and common interconnections between the people involved would be a more interesting take on things, IMO.

That, in and of itself, would not sway my decision too greatly. The fact that I am not terribly impressed with the beers might. I prefer many other cheaper brands of IPA to Stone, and the Arrogant Bastard is sort of gimicky... don't want to drink two in a row. However, the Vertical Epic series is some of the best beer I've ever tasted. I loved the 2008 hoppy tripel.

Auggie came accross as a jerk in the film too, and I wouldn't let tht influence me... but I might be swayed by learning that AB is in charge of mechandising 73% of all chain groceries and uses that influence to push other beers off the shelf.

I love Stone beer and prior to seeing the trailer for this movie I never really knew what Greg Koch looked like... then I saw the trailer and saw him. My first impression of him was a big time smart ass (which I'm not totally adverse too being that I can be that way too sometimes :D ) ... this led me to watch some YouTube Stone blogs and then I liked him better. I think he just gets a little ampped up on a camera and wants to be that cool dude. Anyway, the blogs seemed to show a little mellower, normal guy with the exception of being a super devoted craft brewer from head to toe.

In terms of not buying his beer because he's labeled an arrogant A-hole, F-that.... I could choose to hate the guy, but certainly would not hate the brew!

My 2 pennies.

Yeah I might like him more because I've watched all of his vblogs...some more than once...

I just like Stone, their no-apologetic approach to brewing, their charity work, and all of the amazing work they do to help further craft brew. If it weren't for them, quite a number of great brews would be without distribution. They do discounted distribution for their friends (read: any craft brewery) so they don't have to sell their souls to AB. Just ask Patrick Rue. If not just for that, I am more than willing to buy some of their beer every month.

I agree with the sentiment of I don't care if the company's CEO was a jerk. If he made wonderful God-nectar beer, I could care less what kind of person he/she is.
