I am seriously contemplating doing a live webcam brew session with a chatroom for live Q&A. The brew would be all grain and most likely something simple such as a pale ale. So far, I have recieved a lot of intrest from people on this, but I figure a poll might give me a decent idea on how big this might be (bandwith wise). Right now I am currently researching free relay servers to do the video feed for me because I simply do not have the bandwith capacity if the interest is high enough. A relay server would eliminate the bandwith problem. I have finally found a free relay server that will work, but I would like to take a poll and test a couple more servers before I fully commit to this. If the demand is high enough, its on for sure. I really feel that this could be a great way for extract brewers to see and learn about all grain brewing and possibly eliminate any fears/hesitations they may have about going all grain. Plus, I figure some current allgrainers may even want to hang out in the chatroom and spread their expertise for those who have questions.

Thanks for the time guys,

thanks guest. So far I have generated over 50 interests on this and that number is still growing. I'm guessing the number is going to be somewhere around 100+ people by the weekend. I'll give the polls i have running a few days to get a better idea on how many people I can expect and how much bandwith i'm going to need.

KrOtCh, I suggest that you also run this poll on a larger forum, like the B3 or Northern Brewer forums. This forum has less than than 300 users, the others are many thousands strong. You'll get a more realistic polling sample with the larger numbers.

There is a poll on another site. Last time i checked, that poll was over 50 that say yes. I've also recieved emails on the side from others that said they wanted to leave the voting up to the extract brewers but that they would watch the cam and answer questions in the chatroom if i did it. So far, the numbers are somewhere around 75 with a large number extremely excited about the idea. Not bad considering the poll was only started last night.

O.K. Guys,
At this point, the brewcam is definately happening. The response has just been overwelmingly positive. I've generated over 120 votes and over 800 page views regarding the poll. I imagine a lot of people who didn't vote will still pop in, at least to check it out, once the date is set. All that is left now is planning the broadcast date, editing the video, and purchasing the bandwith. What I've pretty much decided is that the cam will not be live. There are just too many latency periods in allgrain brewing where nothing exciting is happening. The direction I am leaning towards is a one time stream of a recorded broadcast with the latent periods cut out and during the one time stream, have a live chatroom for Q&A. That will cut the broadcast down to about 2 hours.
I'll keep you guys posted on the date. I'm shooting for the first Saturday of November to correspond with the AHA's teach a friend to homebrew day.
