Hop Utilization

idea for brew strong, "hop utilization"

i have just recently realized the utilization formula you use can change your "on paper" IBUs by a significant amount.

i found this website that has some good info about three of the formulas out there, I think this would be a good topic for the show.

any thoughts?

Yeah, I'd also like to know what all those numbers are that they give you when you look at hop data. It's sort of like the equivalent of a malt analysis sheet. It has things like beta acid and humulone and cuhumulone content. (I have no idea how to spell it but that's kinda what they look like)

-"But it's 7am"
-"Scotch?"

There was a basic brewing radio episode a while back which compared Tinseth v Rager v actual measured IBUs in a variety of beers - plus a few other formulas.

Was interesting in their findings - which I can't remember now - I'll have to listen again too!

Boobookitttyfuk,

Try going to www.nzhops.co.nz and emailing them and see if they will ship you some. They should have 100g samples. I will actually probably go down there to visit them at the end of wine vintage in early june. My LHBS usually doesn't have nelson sauvin in stock and if they do they are usually pretty old.
