Exercise

Tue Apr 03, 2007 11:56 am

Many of you know that I am trying to whip my fat old butt into shape before I have to go to a coaching seminar this summer. I have been making an effort to walk a lot more and even a little light jogging. So far I have managed to lose about ten pounds even! The Mrs came across a exercise bike at a yard sale last weekend and came dragging it home. I was a little peeved there at first but after awhile I kind of got to liking it. That is one time the Mrs seems OK with me sitting in front of the TV if I am pedalling the thing. My butt gets a little sore but It is getting better. I can pedal it for about 30 minutes before I have to get off for a breather. In between times I do either pushups or situps then get back on the bike. I have not weighed myself since I started Sunday but I bet I have lost a couple more pounds

The exercise is paying off I think. Like I said I have lost a little weight and I have been feeling better and more relaxed. I am feeling a little better about this stupid clinic. Also my doctor is happy I am losing weight. He wants me to come in for a checkup but I told him I was not due yet. He is way to anxious to stick his finger in my butt.

Anyway I got to wondering what the rest of you do for exercise if anything. I wish now I had kept in shape. If you are just sitting around getting fat you should reconsider because when you get my age it is hard to get back.

Remember. Beer is good but it also makes you fat.

I am a little bias since I was a swimmer and played water polo, but swimming is the best excercise for you. It works every muscle, builds your lungs, is great for the joints and is one of the most efficient ways to burn fat.

Of course the key is knowing how to swim. You won't get too much benefit if you don't have some basic stroke dynamics. Look for a swim clinic at the local YMCA or similar place... they are cheap (or free) and can give you some basic pointers on swimming the freestyle (or Austrailian crawl... or whatever you call it across the pond) which will get you by.

Great suggestion about swimming. This is small town USA though and it is cold outside. We pack our swimming britches away for the winter and break out the ice skates. I do not skate or play hockey so I guess I am an odd ball. But we will not be doing much swimming for a few more months. Then yeah I agree that is good exercise.

I know where you're coming from. I sit on my ass behind a desk all day so I was starting to turn into a fat bastard. I can't stand gyms and jogging is evil so I took up swordfighting instead. Its amazing how fit you get swinging a broadsword around for a few hours a week. Recently I gave up the car and started catching the train to work which means a 1/2 hour walk each way to and from the station. Tell you what that really shifts the gut quickly.

That has a totally different connotation on the BN.

I get most of my exercise jumping to conclusions, taking leaps of faith, running late, and flying off the handle.

My routine has always been once the harvest is in and all is well I go into hermit mode. Tried lots of hobbies to pass the winters and burned out on so many I cannot even count.

Sword fighting huh? Your life insurance agent know about your hobby? Because it has to suck when you lose.

I forgot to mention the best benifit of getting in a little better shape. I have noticed I am a little more frisky of late. The Mrs noticed too.
