Where to drink in downtown Denver...

Sat May 21, 2011 4:37 pm

I'll be in Denver next weekend for a few days. Every year the wife buys me a trip to some city for beer related fun for a birthday gift. Last year was San Diego, this year in Denver. I've got a brewery tours in mind, but any good recommendations for beer bars or gastro pubs I should hit?

Close your eyes, spin around for a while, open your eyes, walk in that direction.

Falling Rock is definitely the best one place, maybe the best one place in the country. Hit the Great Divide Tap Room as well, which is nearby. A lot of people recommend Wynkoop. I went there once and had too fine beers and one beer with levels of diacetyl that were so ridiculously high that I was amazed they were serving it.

If the weather is nice and you have time, The Rack House is walking distance from downtown. Good beer bar, very good food, and they make Stranahan's Whisky there.

Sweet, thanks for the reply. I'll definitely check Falling Rock out.

If you end up at Great Divide walk down the street and grab a PBR from the Bar Bar. It's a total dive but the best dive ever. There's also a pretty decent "Belgian" bar on Colfax near the capital (can't remember the name but it's something pretty obvious); their selection is sort of hit or miss but if you're there on the right day they have some interesting bottles. Pints Pub is also pretty great; they have house cask ales that are generally of high quality and a whiskey selection that is probably one of the best in the country. Argonaut and Mondo Vino are pretty good if you want to pick up some bottles; and Liquor Mart down on Colorado (not exactly downtown but a short ride on DART) is also unexpectedly good for bottle shopping.

That's the one. Thanks for refreshing my memory. It's been almost two years since I moved out of Denver but damn the more I think about all the great places to get my booze on the more I miss it. Luckily we're cutting our trail back from NHC through Denver :aaron

Doh, yeah Cheeky Monk. Great beer there and great food. I was out to judge the NHC first round last month walked in there and they had just killed a keg of Supplication. FML (they replaced it with the La Rulles Tripel, which was awesome).
