Posted about the AHA lag time for a new card at BA

Sat Mar 05, 2011 6:07 am

I finally joined the AHA. They took my money within 24 hours, but four weeks later emailed to say it would be another three weeks to get a card.

I said that as their focus was on taking my money, not giving service, they likely got the last $38 they were ever getting from me.

Posted this at Beer Advocate, within 5 minutes the post was yanked.

I know folks have been saying BA has turned towards pimping for sponsors, but this was really bad. How long before bad beer reviews start getting deleted?

BA seems to yank threads with little reason. We posted a thread about beers themed after a series of books (Game of Thrones) and it was deleted within 30 minutes or so of posting.

Sucks about your AHA card though...

I love the GOT series! Just got the email from Amazon that DWD is coming (finally!) I'd love to hear more about the beers. Is there a site?

I thought so, too. About half my beer memberships/paid events end up being disappointing. The worst is paying 30 or 40 bucks to go to an event/lecture, and having several of the beer "experts" in the crowd run their mouths to show off their knowledge or mack on the few women there--and missing the lecture because of their mouths.

I will just chalk this one up as another beer backstabbing.

As for BA, that really cheesed me. I have counted on them for a long time for rating info, and now I am suspecting that I shouldn't. I recall the big twitter fight three months ago where they went after another beer blogger, and I should have suspected something then.

They seem very opinionated over there, I just signed up for the AHA, so hopefully I see my card sometime too. Did you at least start getting Zymurgy before that, or not until after the card came?

I renewed with the link a few months back as well. I didn't get the mags until after the card came which was quite a while. I'm slightly drunk at the moment, but I'm guessing it took around 34 years or so. Maybe it was less. I don't know. The last time I had a lapse in mags, I sent an email to Gary Glass & I had the back issues in my box a few days later.

I renewed a long expired AHA membership this year in anticipation for some big-ish event happening here this summer.

When I resubscribed I was in the middle of moving, but had informed USPS of that and after moving had started receiving my forwarded mail, but after 3 months had not yet received my AHA membership.

I realized they have a delay in sending memberships, but emailed them asking what was up because I had started receiving Zymurgy already. I got a prompt response to my email asking to verify my address. They had the old one still so I told them the new address and they said they'd send out another card. About 10 days later I received my card sent directly to my new address and then 3 days later I received the card they sent to my old address that had been forwarded by the USPS.

I don't know if the delay on my original card was related to a holdup with the AHA or with the USPS, but to be honest, I don't really care.

I decided to pony up to support the AHA and all that they do for homebrewing. I subscribed for 3 years and when that's up, I'll resubscribe. Please understand that your subscription isn't just to benefit the subscriber, but to benefit homebrewers in general. Their biggest interest isnt in sending out membership cards, but rather to support homebrewers across the country!

Have some patience in waiting for your card. From what I remember, they only send them once a month at the beginning of the month. If you joined at the beginning of a month, but after that month's shipment date, it may take a while for them to get your card out to you, but it will get there eventually!

If you need your membership number to register for an event you can contact the AHA:

I understand your frustration with slow service but they are good folks and do work hard addressing the issues of homebrewers.
