Männertag

Today, May 25th, is a special beer related holiday in Germany. Ascension Day or commonly known as Männertag (mens day) or Vatertag (fathers day) is a day when the male population seems to have one goal: get away from the wifes/girl fiends, head out with other guys and get drunk in public.

To me, this is a much better celebration of being a man than having Fathers day, which just a male version of Mothersday and has probably been created by tool manufaturers.

Many will head for the beer gardens or have a cook-out. But the best idea is taking a cart, loading it with a keg or cases of beer and head for the woods with some friends. I miss those days :(. Public drunkeness laws make it pretty much impossible to pull something like this off in the US. So I will just have some friends over tonight and have a cook-out. Maybe we get to kick the Maibock ;)

Maybe they have some nice footage on the german news today. I'll have to check.

This doesn't sound any different than what my Family does on Father's day, or Memorial Day, or the 4th of July (except for the fireworks) or Labor Day.... I don't know who you're hanging out with but they don't sound like much fun...

I thought Maennertag und Vatertag are the exact same???? Am I mistaken...my tradition is to get my dad a bottle of really good privately distilled schnaps...nothing says more I love you Dad than distilled stuff...

That's what I thought to. Growing up there was only Himmelfahrt (aka Maennertag, Vatertag, Herrentag .... ) and we would get our Dad someting. But recently I noticed that Fathers Day (a Sunday in June if I remember correctly) gained popularity in Germany as well. This however is more intended to be a day that dad spends with his family.

Sorry if I caused some confusion.

The only confusion left is the Himmel guy and his gas problem...
