Well... It happened. The gig is up. I came home from work yesterday and the gap was closed, the caps... gone. I stood there in shock, trying to think about what I will say to my wife. I should have been prepared for that moment, really. I didn't know what to do, my glorious caps, my guilty pleasure.... finished.
Just then, SWMBO walks in and before I realized what I did, "HOW MANY WERE THERE?", I blurted, staring at the crack, with more than a hint of maniacal emotion in my voice. That was arguably my first mistake. She turned to me, her eyes squinting in rage, "What do you mean" she said through clenched teeth. Clearly, in that moment, she had realized that this was more than my usual douche-baggery. "Did you count them or did you just throw them away?!?" I said. Mistake number two. "Are you serious?" she scowled.
Suddenly coming to the conclusion that I was in trouble, my mind went into damage control mode. My first thought was to deny my involvement. "too late for that" I thought. I then started dreaming up a reason that she could not get mad at me for. "I was saving them for recycling, you know, for the environment" or "There is a little girl that has a rare disease and she needs those caps to live" (this didn't make any sense, but at the time, it seemed reasonable). I thought better of that idea. My next brainstorm was honesty. "tell her everything, tell her how much joy stashing my caps in the crack gave me. It's no big deal, really. Tell her about this thread. Tell her that Daniela thought it was adorable." my mind was racing.
"Uh... sorry" was the brilliant reply i gave her, moments before she lauched into her tirade. It was a blur mostly. "you never clean shit" "I'm always cleaning up after you" "I'm NOT a maid" "if you ever do anything like that again I will tear your balls off" were some of the highlights of her rant (I'm sure many of you can relate). She stormed off.
We havn't spoken about it since, but i'm sure I've not heard the last of this.
But, oddly enough, it was worth it.
