"society" passes laws against DUI because fucking asshole politicians are grandstanding for their retarded constituents, all because Neo-prohibtionist groups like MADD have convinced the stupid they care about safety and not banning alcohol

Our politicians pass laws against DUI because some people drive drunk and kill other people. Laws may vary by state but most I have been in are .08. Many more seasoned drinkers feel that a .08 alcohol level has no effect on them. They may be right, but for many or even most people .08 is drunk and not a joke at all.

I drink a pretty fair amount, mostly of high gravity beers and mead. I never get behind the wheel after I've had a few without waiting at least few hours, and if I did get pulled over for drunken driving, the only person I would have to blame is me. The only person that you should be angry at is you.

What I learned about myself after buying a breathalyzer was that I feel completely fine up until .09-.10. It's right around .12 when I think I'm starting to get close to the limit. The problem is that I'm drunk at the time & my judgment is already off. I don't feel that a .08 has an effect on me, but I know it does. I think that's one of the biggest dangers of our hobby - it builds a tolerance, you can have the best intentions but you're still fucked up. I'd agree that most seasoned drinkers aren't going to feel it at .08, but I disagree that it has no effect. The seasoned drinker is just going to be more accustomed to the feeling & is able to unconsciously compensate to make it look & feel like he's not intoxicated to himself and the others around him.

I highly recommend a breathalyzer for anyone. You can guess if you're ok or not, but if you don't actually know, you don't know. As I mentioned before, there were 2 times I was going to drive & felt ok. Both times I was hovering around a .10. Without the device, I guarantee I would've gotten behind the wheel. I would've probably made it home safe without killing myself or anyone else, but probably just isn't good enough.

By the way, I have the AlcoMate Prestige. Not saying this is the place to get it from or the best price, just so you have a reference point. I think I got mine for roughly 80-90 bucks or so.

We have a law against that, it's called murder.

Well said Ozwald. I wish i would have bought that breathalyzer I have been eying at the homebrew shop then i would have known I was over the limit (.11) and waited a while to get behind the wheel. You are right about the mind playing tricks on you. Live and learn. Cheers
