Crazy weather

Wed Feb 21, 2007 10:27 am

Last Wednesday I had to put off brewing for a day because we had blowing snow and a minus 20° wind chill. Brrrrrrr!

Here it is exactly one week later and almost 60°! I didn't even have to put my shoes on to go take the garbage can to the curb. I am brewing today to take advantage of the weather before the next blizzard hits this weekend. It's amazing how drastic the weather changes can be out here on the plains.

Folks in California and such places wonder why us folks here on the high plains talk about weather so much. It's because there is always something happening. Weather on the left coast is boring. Just gentle shifts in temperature and moisture compared to single day 60° temperature swings, drought in the summer, floods in the spring. Minus 25° temps in the winter and 120°+ temps in the summer. When you look at "averages" of our weather conditions, the weather here is quite pleasant. However, we seldom get an "average" day, it always seems to be at some extreme.

All that said, I love the climate here! It's always interesting. Does that make me wierd?

Plains nothin'! Last week it snowed and sleeted and everything was covered with Ice. After that it dropped to 20f and lower and stayed there for the week. Today it is 46f and sunny.

It's the El-Nino-Global-Warming-Ice-Age!

You are just a little slow that is all, we had that weather for the entire month of January, I can finally see my lawn a little. There were people without power for the entire month of January due to an ice storm at the beginning of the month. I still have about 3 inches of snow over most of it and it has been in the 40s all week.

Let the pissing contest begin.

I am with you Bug, craziness out here in these there plains.

As a life-long Northern Californian, I can tell you our crazy weather is different here. Sure, it's unlikely you'll ever die from the weather here in San Francisco, but it's also easy to find whatever weather you like by driving a few miles, especially in summer.

Back a few years ago, I had a job out towards the RAT PAD, in Lafayette, on the back side of the hills that separate that area from the bay. It could be 100+ at the end of the day when I walked to take the BART train back to the city. Once through the hills, in Oakland, the tempeture was bearable again. Coming up out of the subway in downtown San Francisco, it was a chill 65 and foggy.

We get our weird swings, but I guess the weather is more mellow, like the people. Peace! ; )

A good friend of mine is the Director of the High Plains Climate Research Center at UNL. He says that due to the seasonal extremes in weather and the frequency of extreme weather events (tornados, blizzards, torrential rains, droughts, etc.) the High Plains (North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Wyoming and Colorado) are considered to have the harshest climate on the planet. Places like the Sonoran and Sahara deserts and the arctic regions, while extreme, they do have a pretty stable climate. We don't.

If you want to check out some incredible weather photos, take a look at Ken Dewey's site: http://www.hprcc.unl.edu/nebraska/photo-gallery.html

I was one of the storm spotters the night that this set of storms took place.
http://www.hprcc.unl.edu/nebraska/may22 ... eport.html

The entire community of Hallam, Nebraska nearly disappeared that night. We had over 30 tornados in less than 8 hours as part of that storm system that went from Kansas, through Nebraska and on into Iowa. As we were preparing to evacuate surviving residents of Hallam to an emergency shelter in the High School in the town of Hickman, another tornado wiped out that building. Yes, weather can be exciting here.
