Atlanta, Georgia

Sat Jul 23, 2011 2:57 pm

I'm taking the family on a trip to Atlanta, Georgia to spend time with the brother-in-law and his wife and kids. I've never left the Pacific Northwest. Anyone have some suggestions for what to see in Atlanta, eat in Atlanta, or drink in Atlanta. I'm sure I'll have to find some Abita. Any other suggestions?

Skip the Abita and get Sweetwater (as mentioned) and Terrapin. Drink everything by Terrapin, then drink it again. Then, if you have more time, go for the Abita.

I don't know what part of town you'll be in but Melton's App and Tap has a pretty awesome beer list, as does Leon's Full Service in downtown Decatur. The Brick Store Pub has a pretty amazing beer list but in my experience the service there has been pretty poor as of late. In my opinion it has become too easy to find good beer in Atlanta to have to put up with poor service. Twain's in Decatur has some amazing hot wings if you go for that kind of thing and a pretty good beer list also.

Second Terrapin. They have some great standards, and some amazing seasonal and side project beers. One of my favorites from them Big Hoppy Monster is about to come out in a week or two. If you want to check out their site they have some good information on their beers.

As far as beer bars there are a number of good ones including 2 that are on a few lists for the best beer bars any where. Porter bar in little five points and the Brick Store in Decatur. :aaron Decatur is also a great place to get some food with a lot of great local choices.

Another good place to check out is 5 seasons brew pub. Not big fan of their food, but they have some good beer with some unique options on tap on a fairly regular bases.

Places to go. I am a hiking fan and stone mountain state park is a good option and the aquarium is as well, but it can be a bit busy.

I do have one suggestion on what not to do. DONT go to World of Coke. It is an overpriced advertisement. The kids will probably love it, but you will want to end yourself half way through just to get out of there the fastest way possible.

What part of town? The previously mentioned bars in Decatur and Little 5 Points are excellent and have great selections. If down in Little Five Points, there's a new place called the Wrecking Bar. It's an old house that used to sell architectural antiques, but converted to a brew pub. One of their employees also works at my LHBS. Your choices get a little slimmer out in the 'burbs, but Taco Mac and Summits have HUGE selections are both are kid-friendly.

Seconds on Terrapin and Sweetwater. Also, check out Jailhouse - located down in Hampton - they make an excellent IPA.

When will you be in town? I'd be happy to bring you a bottle of the Ironman IPA I brewed last week with the hops you sent.
