DragonCon 2011 (Atlanta, GA in September)

Fri Mar 04, 2011 8:25 pm

So... Mrs. Spiderwrangler and I are thinking of going to DragonCon in Atlanta, GA this year (Sept. 2-5).

We would be planning on driving down from Columbus, OH if we are able to make it, but were wondering if there were any BNers in the Atlanta area. At the very least, I'd be interested in a heads up on good beer places in the area, or meeting up for a beer or five.
If anyone is willing to take a couple of couch surfers for a night or more, that'd be great and go a long way towards making it an affordable trip for us. And we'd certainly be more than willing to bring down a bunch of beer, perhaps stuff that isn't available in GA.
I can promise that we wouldn't be ungrateful fucks.

I've heard that Sweetwater is good beer, think Token may have mentioned that on a call in... anything else I should look for?

I would love to help you out Titwrangler. Unfortunately, I will be in the Washington DC area around the first of September.

As for beer in Atlanta, Sweetwater is a great local brewery. Their tours are Wed-Friday 1730-1030 and 1430-1630 on Saturday. The tasting is 8 bucks for 6 half pint pours and you keep the pint glass or you can opt for 6 very small free pours. In Sept, the weather will be nice and there is usually a live band playing outside on the patio.

Terrapin is located ~ 45 mins away in Athens GA and their tastings/tours are very similar to Sweetwater's.

5 Seasons Restaurant Brewery has 3 locations. It's not really fair to call them a brew pub because their food is awesome.

The Brick Store Pub in Decatur GA is one of the best beer bars in the world according to some blog/magazine. It's also worth a visit.

RedBrick is another local brewery.

Taco Mac is a chain of sports bars and most lations have more than 150 beers on tap.

Been to Dragon*Con the last 3 years now. It just keeps getting bigger and crazier.

Sweetwater is one of my favorites, and Terrapin makes some pretty good stuff as well. The Sweetwater pub in the airport always makes the flight home a bit more enjoyable :)

Definitely don't miss out on Sweetwater, and in my opinion the trip to Terrapin would be worth the short drive. I have meant to check into 5 Seasons but haven't found the time just yet. I wish the Mrs. and I had room to put you up but don't...sorry. We just moved back from Memphis into a condo with about half the square footage of out house in Memphis. It looks like a damn warehouse in here.

Ha, that's fine, appreciate the beer tips. If anyone had some lawn for us to pitch a tent (ha!) on, that'd work for accommodations too. Anyway, we are hoping to make it down, but haven't pulled the trigger yet ticket wise, etc.
