How'd my gravity get so high?

Sun Sep 30, 2007 1:24 pm

I did my first minimash today. I did a modified version of Jamil's APA. The recipe I used is here:

http://www.gigapants.com/recipes/Jamils ... imash.html

Anyway, promash estimated that I'd get a 1.057 OG. I ended up with a 1.070! I mashed at 151 for 60 minutes, recirculated the wort a bit and drew it off. Then I did a 5 minute sparge at 171. My entire grain bill was:

.5 lbs crystal 20
.5 lbs crystal 40
.5 lbs victory
.5 lbs munich
2 lbs 2-row

At 15 minutes left in the boil, I added 4lbs extra-light DME.

I poured the wort through a strainer in my funnel to get out most of the larger particulate matter. What could I have done to end up with an OG so high?

Was this actually a full wort boil or was it a top up situation? Could have run into the classic issue of a dense wort pocket.

It's a 5 gallon batch. I started topping it up, and stopped a bit short of 5 gallons. The gravity was in the 1.07's, so I kept filling up to the 5 gal point, and it was still 1.070. I put it in my fridge, didn't pitch yeast yet, and let it sit there for an hour, and tested it again, still 1.070. I'm just stumped.

Ah, that must have been it. I just took another reading, and it's 1.052. That's more like where I thought it'd be. Thanks, man.

Just so you know, Jamil's recipe's are all targeted for 6 gallons.

Yeah, I scaled it down to 5 by dropping a lb of DME. It made my target OG hit about the same place as Jamil's, though the ratio of victory, munich, crystal 20, and crystal 40 was a little higher.
