mash tun

Mon Jan 22, 2007 6:05 pm

what is the functionality of a mash tun. I just got done looking at a picture of a converted cooler with the cpvc in it but I am unfamiliar with the process. Every batch I have made so far has been using extracts and I would like to step it up to at least partial mash but I am unsure of the differences in procedure.

Welcome and Go Bears.
The Mash Tun takes malted grain, soak in warm water. The warm water converts the starches in the grain to sugars. (this is mashing)... the cpvc manifold in the bottom acts as a filter or strainer to keep the grain in the bucket and allows the water and sugars to be easily removed for the boil process (the part you do now).

Welcome

Another option for a mash tun is a braided Stainless Steel hose. Check out my website for pictures.
