Steeping Mistake

Thu Jan 21, 2010 9:08 am

I just realized that i screwed up my beer. It's my first one so i guest that's allright. I steeped the grains in really hot water, like just boiling hot. How worried should i be? Don't worry i wont throw it out, i could never waste beer, but is there anything i can do to help? Its in the fermentor 6 days now.

Thanks

You probably weren't using a whole lot of grain, so I bet the mistake won't turn out to be a big one. Like said above, too hot of water on the grains gives an astringent flavor like you're sucking on a tea bag, but if you didn't have a lot of grain in there, the effect will likely be minimal. Next time, no water over 170 with the grains.
