Going from Extract to AG for under $10

If you're an extract brewer like me, who didn't feel ready to consider all-grain brewing for a while, you may not have even looked at the All-Grain Brewing threads on the forum. I've been a member for a year and just checked it out today because I'm getting ready to add that aspect to my brewing arsenal.

The first sticky post is a thread from 2007 about cheap AG brewing. The title is misleading because you still need a full-size kettle (7.5gal or more), but you don't need a Mash/Lauter Tun or Hot Liquor Tank.

I thought it should be represented here as well as the AG Thread, since it would probably affect more Extract brewers than AG brewers who already have all of their equipment.

That's not a bad idea.

The hardest part about switching to AG is the hurdle of buying that initial equipment.

IMHO, it's worth it. I've been brewing all grain for a year now, and the difference in my beer is stunning.

Two obstacles people encounter is knowledge, gear, and time.

Brewing AG is easier than a person might think. You can brew by simply dumping grains into your cooler, pouring in water (known as mashing), letting it sit and then pouring some more water in at a higher temp (sparging.) From there you collect the wort, and boil just like you would an extract batch.

It really is that simple.

Cost can be a little more. I had to buy a bazooka screen and a valve. I would add, however, that this cost pays for itself after the first 3 batches. All grain brewing is cheaper then brewing extracts. For a 5 gallon batch of our amber ale, we pay about 13 dollars for the supplies.

I'm a cheap ass bastard. Here's what I did.

First I took a coleman cooler I had in the garage and removed the water faucet attachment. I then instered a screen, and screwed on a valve that i got at home depot.

Now, just about any cooler will work as long as it has about 10 gallon capactiy.
