There's nothing wrong with using dry yeast in a starter. It's typically not needed since those packets already have a very high cell count; even moreso than the vial/smackpack. If you hydrate the dry yeast in water first, you'll have a great starter.

Thanks. It was the LHBS that advised against dry starters, but I think her actual words were "You don't do starters with Dry yeast". She may not have meant that it's bad, moreso than it's just not necessary...IDK.

I would think that if it was just old/improperly stored yeast, that it would just not ferment well. In fact it was the opposite...it was like rocket fuel. Vommit scented rocket fuel.

Now that I understand about the cell count being higher with dry, I realize that the volume of the starter should have been much greater. I pitched two packages into just 1L of 1.040 DME wort. No way was it or the erlenmeyer flask infected.

If you're not a part of the solution, your'e a part of the precipitate.

2 packs in 1 L of starter likely means you got little to no growth. If you are buying DME to make starters, it is often cheaper/easier to just buy and additional pack of dry yeast.

If I had only taken the advice sooner to buy the Mr. Malty pitching rate app...
