From How To Brew, John Palmer says on page 31, "The syrups are approximately 20% water, so 4 pounds of dry malt extract (DME) is roughly equal to 5 pounds of liquid malt extract (LME)."

You tend to get 43 PPPG (points per pound per gallon) from DME, also stated in How To Brew. I don't work w/ extracts much, so that's about all the info I can get ya.

so it'd be .8LME = DME then I guess.

I've done some searching and cannot find Munich DME anywhere though. This recipe is getting expensive

It'd be the other way around... .8DME=LME ... the DME is more "concentrated" by weight. I did a quick search, and couldn't find Munich DME either. Do you do any mini mashing/steeping? I'm pretty sure Munich will steep alright, and with .5 a pound of 2 row, you could even get a lil mini mash goin'. not sure of your process though.

I do mini mash and was thinking of just mashing the munich along with the other grains that are supposed to be steeped (Crystal 40 & 120, victory and pale chocolate) I could just add some munich to that and mash away.

Do that. Munich has enough diastatic power to convert itself... and if you throw in another .5# of 2row, you'll be good to go. Definitely the best solution, IMO.

that may raise the OG

in a steep the victory and pale chocolate are going to give color and flavor, but they're not going to add any extract - because neither of them can self-convert, and there isn't a base malt in there to contribute enzymes

turn that to a mini mash, with munich, and you're now going to get some extract from the victory and pale chocolate

I wouldn't worry about it, it's likely to be a small amount. Just wanted you to be aware if you're trying to follow the recipe exactly and want to end up with the same numbers that are in the book.
