chumps

Thu Apr 30, 2009 6:28 pm

The Beer Geek is now gone, so I have decided so sacrifice one bottle to see what the gravity is,since I know you bastards will ask. The cascade dry hopped is 1.012 FG. I am now realizing that getting the hops out of the carboy is good fun. I am suprised at how aromatic they still after 5 days, when trying to rinse the gallon jug. I will check back in a week after (if) the bottles have carbonated, and give you all a report. If anyone wants you to try another hop thing let me know. I also might try a oak (dowel) aging experiment next. Basic Brewing had someone on that does this, so I am going to mail James some questions to see if I am on the right track. Being at this only 5 months, I want to ask very basic (tell me like I am a 5 year old) questions. Does this interest anyone, or am I just a drunk dumb fuck? Or do I post just to make people yell at me to stop posting?

That's why I like to dry hop with pellets. They break up and eventually settle into the trub, so you can just pour the sludge out after you rack.

Both, I think :P

I may not respond because I have nothing to contribute. But I'm interested. I try to get as much information as I can out of this forum. And some :unicornrainbow: .

That would be Michael Tonnesmeire modeling his sour beers after research done by Raj Apte. That is meant for long term storage and allowing the correct amount of oxygen to permeate into the beer for the bugs. I think if you just want to do oak, you might be better off with cubes.

and +1 to what Dirk said.

Michael Tonnesmeire's site is - http://madfermentationist.blogspot.com/

Raj Apte - http://www2.parc.com/emdl/members/apte/ (I think that's the one. It's super basic but has lots of info)

dry hop experiment RESULTS

Fri May 08, 2009 11:54 am

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I need all the help I can get. Here's the results. On the pour, the cascade has about twice the head, and a bit darker of the amarillo and the control beer. The amarillo smells a bit of lemon compared to the control. The cascade has a bit more orange aromas. Both beers lost a little of the spicyness of the control beer. I would have to say either would be a nice addition to try, adding complexity to the aromas. In taste, the amarillo is a bit rounder in flavor and mouth feel than the control. The hop spice hangs around a while longer after drinking too. The cascade has an almost orange marmalade and peppercorn taste, with an almost lemongrass kick. But the control has a more simplistic, straight ahead spice tingle, while the amarillo and cascade are mellower, smoother, subtler flavors, but more interesting to me. In the end, I would have to say that dry hopping is going to be standard practice in my pale ale. Next batch might have to be 1 gallon of the cascade dh, and divide the remaining 4 into 4 different hops; simcoe (because I have them), centenial, fuggle, and mt. hood. Just so you know, a half ounce of plug just fits into the one gallon jug with the beer. So after that, I guess I try either adding more hops or leaving them in for a longer time. I'm not going to get into half of one hop, and half of another, too many combinations. What you the masses think?

thanks again, and peace out yall

Pepperford,
You talked me into it. Ive ordered batch 5 and 6. My first four turned out well, but I'm ready to put my own touch on the brews, but not ready to all grain yet. I ordered a hop infuser. It holds an OZ of hops (I'm going leaf) and it hangs in the secondary by the air lock. I'm making a Simcoe Select IPA. I'm going to dry-hop it with an additional OZ of simcoe for 10 days. I know its not terribly creative using the same hop the kit comes with, but I'm looking to increase hoppyness because I love hops. (and you thought know one cared) Thanks bro.
