To decant or not decant...

Sat Nov 03, 2007 4:20 pm

Getting ready to pitch 3.2 L starter off 2 vials of WLP 001 started last night into a 1.096 batch of Imperial Stout. If I do not decant I figure the impact is a drop of ~ 5-6 points. No big deal, I actually meant to boil longer and should have acconted for it.

Just wondered after 24 hours is the thought is pitch it all or try to decant some off the top? Yeast is just starting to leave a layer on the bottom of each growler.

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

Right on...I gave it a whiff and smelled yeast so I figured I had lots in suspension. Plus the old adage (plus a few beers) started to ring..Relax, don't worry..." So, I did just that. I just have not done such a large starter before.

The major take-away is I figured out how to account for the huge starter slightly diluting my wort and dropping my OG.

Thanks Lufah.

I'm way to lazy to worry about too much shit. I like it easy. :)
